【作品について】
「小栗判官」伝説に題をとった本作は、歌舞伎よりも古い説経節などの形態にルーツを持つ小栗の物語が繰り返し語り直され、形を変えていく有様自体を扱った作品だ。終わることのない、どこまでが現実か非現実か分からない長いヒッチハイクの旅の最中で出会う二人のやり取りから、現代社会において分節化し不安定な状態に置かれた自我の問題、そして、そのなかでどのように他人と関係を築けば良いのか、といった問題が浮かび上がる。
演出においては、日本の伝統芸能の技法を参照し、モノローグとダイアローグ、ナレーションと内省、現在と過去が入り混じる独特の文体を通して、幻想的ながらメタフィクショナルな物語空間が立ち現れる。
【「小栗判官」のあらすじ】
許嫁である照手姫の親族に殺された小栗は閻魔の裁きにより現生に舞い戻ります。餓鬼阿弥となった小栗が元の姿に戻るためには、熊野の温泉で湯治をしなければいけません。瀕死の小栗を発見した僧侶は彼を熊野に送り届けるため、小栗を車に乗せ「この車を引いた者には供養がある」と書いた札を貼り付けます。そして小栗は相模から熊野まで、ヒッチハイクで辿り着くのです。

The screening of Allergen Theatre’s “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Kumano” from Dec.6-9th at ST Spot Yokohama. The screening will be held instead of the production “Methods Employed by the Silirus Asotus” which was cancelled due to unexpected circumstances.

[About the Play]
“A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Kumano” is an adaptation of the Kabuki play “Oguri Hangan.” Written and directed by Kyle Yamada, the play draws on the fact that the “Oguri” legends have roots much older than Kabuki, and deals with the constant adaptation and re-telling of this myth, through the story of an endless hitchhiking road trip, reminiscent of the limbo state of modern society.
Drawing from traditional Japanese forms of performance, the piece blends monologue and dialogue, narration and introspection, current and past, creating a dream-like state of linear, yet somehow complex meta-storytelling.

[The Story of “Oguri Hangan”]
In the original Kabuki play (and the ancient stories they are based on) Oguri, a samurai assassinated by the father of his fiance, Princess Terute, is allowed by Lord Enma who guards the gates of hell, to return to the world of the living. Back to life in a zombie-like form, Oguri must reach the mystical hotsprings of Kumano to recover to full health. A monk who aids Oguri places him on a cart along with a sign reading “Whoever takes this cart closer to Kumano will receive good karma.” Thus, Oguri makes his way to Kumano as a hitchhiker, at one point even being helped by his former fiance.
